Debra ‘Sista Dee ‘Sarjeant-Smith has extensive experience in the music industry as a steel panist, producer, educator, lecturer, arranger, and music director. She started playing professionally at the age of 13 with her father, touring worldwide and throughout the U.S. She has been an entertainer and lecturer on Holland America cruise lines and a 2nd place prize winner in the Oklahoma City International Music Festival. Other awards include receiving Best Performance Group and Best Caribbean Group in the 2008 Joe Higgs Music and 2009 N.E.U.M.A. competitions respectively.
Teaching is a passion of hers as she strives to spread Caribbean culture, Carnival roots, and knowledge of the steel pan. Debra has taught at many local youth programs including the Cambridge Youth Steel Orchestra, Pan United Steel Band, and P.A.C.E. All A’s after school program. She has served as a lecturer at the Leap Program, music production instructor at Roxbury Community College, and arranger and music producer for the Hartford Steel Symphony. Currently, Debra is the steel pan instructor at Winchester music school and owner-operator of the multi-award winning group Dis-n-Dat band.
